Why shop Local?

When you shop at an independently owned business, your entire community benefits:

  1. Spend $100 at a local shop and $68 of that stays in your community. Spend the same $100 at a national chain, and your community only sees $43.  Spend that online and your community sees $0.

  2. Local businesses create higher-paying jobs for our neighbors.

  3. More of your taxes are reinvested in your community--where they belong.

  4. Buying local means less packaging, less transportation, and a smaller carbon footprint.

  5. Shopping in a local business district means less infrastructure, less maintenance, and more money to beautify your community.

  6. Local retailers are your friends and neighbors—support them and they’ll support you.

  7. Local businesses donate to charities at more than twice the rate of national chains.

  8. More independents means more choice, more diversity, and a truly unique community.

Construction has begun on the Jim Mitchell Community Park! Thanks to great weather in November and ongoing donations, the rough site work has been completed and we are ready to start actual construction in Spring!

Friday March 5 - Warner in Winter

The Warner Historical Society presents a memory-lane feast with “Warner in Winter” in the Gallery, Friday, March 5 @ 7pm.  Free.

Join us at the 8th annual NOFA-NH Winter Conference: "A Place at the Table." NOFA-NH is the voice of organics in New Hampshire, where   Gardeners, growers, families, and friends all have a place at the table.  Celebrating organic food with community, a market fair, films, forums, and workshops. For registration and conference information please visit http://nofanh.org/winterConference.  Keynote speaker is Sharon Astyk, and MainStreet BookEnds will be there again selling all the books.  March 6 starting @ 8:30am, at Rundlett Middle School in Concord.

7:00 p.m., in the Gallery.  Author Colin Beavan began the No Impact Project in November  2006. A newly self-proclaimed environmentalist who could no longer avoid pointing the finger at himself, Colin leaves behind his liberal complacency with a vow to make as little environmental impact as possible for one year. No more automated transportation, no more electricity, no more non-local food, no more material consumption…no problem. That is, until his espresso-guzzling, retail-worshipping wife Michelle and their two-year-old daughter are dragged into the fray.  90 minutes, refreshments served, discussion following the movie. Donations appreciated (to cover screening fee)

Be sure to read the book first...available now in the store!

Saturday March 6 - NOFA-NH Winter Conference

Friday March 12 - Warner Movie Series: No Impact Man

All across NH in March 2010, we are reading To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee.  This is a very special book to us here at MainStreet BookEnds, as the hardcover edition is awarded to each recipient of the Jim Mitchell Scholarship and the Simonds School “Local Hero” Book Award.  Given annually through the non-profit MainStreet Warner, Inc., these awards honor “someone who cares for and about others and for the community of Warner with daily acts of kindness to others with no expectation of any recognition, our own "local heros."  So, in conjunction with THE BIG READ New Hampshire MainStreet BookEnds is proud to announce the following events:

Friday, March 26th @ 7 pm - A showing of To Kill a Mockingbird - the original black & white movie (1962) starring Gregory Peck. Free and Open to all

Sunday, March 28th at 3pm - To Kill a Mockingbird Book Discussion - Join the Warner Area Book Club for a lively discussion on the book and the power it continues to hold in our culture.  Suzanne H. Brown, Visiting Assistant Professor of English at Dartmouth will lead the discussion.

Cleaning up? Getting organized?  Consider donating those books to benefit the ongoing fundraising efforts for the annual Jim Mitchell Scholarship and the Jim Mitchell “Local Hero” Book Award. All books will be appraised and priced by the staff at MainStreet BookEnds, with any books found to be unsaleable donated to other Warner efforts or recycled.  So when you see this label, the purchase of this book goes directly to the Jim Mitchell Scholarship Fund.  MainStreet Warner, Inc. thanks you, and the community of Warner thanks you for supporting our young students.

Book Donations and Scholarship Books

Sunday, April 25 - Book Club

3pm, the group will be discussing Neither Wolf nor Dog: On Forgotten Roads with an Indian Elder by Kent Nerburn.

“Nerburn reluctantly agrees to a meeting with Dan, a Lakota elder who asks him to construct a book from a motley collection of notes, diatribes, and political and social commentaries written over seven decades and kept in an old shoe box.  Nerburn exposes the real truth, which whites are unwilling to face: that in "the hunger to own a piece of the earth, we had destroyed the dreams and families of an entire race." Joined by a dog named Fatback, Dan gives Nerburn the ride of his life as they cross the vast Midwest in Dan's Buick.”

You can meet the author at MainStreet Bookends on Friday, April 30 @ 7 pm.  Kent Nerburn will speak about Neither Wolf nor Dog, as well as his newest book The Wolf at Twilight.  “ A note is left on a car windshield, an old dog dies, and Kent Nerburn finds himself back on the Lakota reservation where he traveled more than a decade before with a tribal elder named Dan. The touching, funny, and haunting journey that ensues goes deep into reservation boarding-school mysteries, the dark confines of sweat lodges, and isolated Native homesteads far back in the Dakota hills in search of ghosts that have haunted Dan since childhood.”

Friday, April 30

We will be selling books as the Master Gardener Association and UNH Cooperative Extension present Welcome Spring! ‘10, a daylong gardening symposium.
