David Carroll - Re-Launch of Self-Portrait with Turtles

SELF-PORTRAIT WITH TURTLES - A RE-LAUNCH

Friday, June 8 at 7 pm in The Gallery

A special "Friday Night on Main Street"

with David M. Carroll

Naturalist, artist, writer

2006 MacArthur Fellow

2009 Finalist for National Book Award

Also the author of The Year of the Turtle, Trout Reflections, Swampwalker's Journal, and Following the Water

We will celebrate with David the re-publication of his memoir, centered on his life (since first turtle at age eight) with turtles and their wild habitats. Out of print for over a decade, the book is now available in a beautiful soft cover edition produced by Brayshaw’s of Warner; the first book to appear under the Spotted Turtle Press imprint.

David will discuss this process, and read selections from this, his fourth book (of five), termed “Radiant…” by Book Page.

David will also talk about his work to be shown in the upcoming “Beyond Words: Three Award-Winning New Hampshire Book Artists” exhibition at the Currier Museum in Manchester, which opens on June 16th and runs until September 9th. The other two book artists in this exhibition are Tomie dePaola and Beth Krommes.

Q and A; comments and discussion welcome; and a book signing will follow the presentation.

Praise for SELF-PORTRAIT WITH TURTLES    (from the back cover)

“The thrill of this well-crafted memoir lies in the story of Carroll’s single-minded pursuit of his passion.” - Maxine Kumin

[Carroll] proves himself a master of the memoir… In his inspired and eloquent evocation of a particular American landscape - the hills and bogs of the north country - he recalls the nineteenth-century writer who chronicled, in vivid detail, the days as they unfolded at a pond we have come to know as Walden.”  Smithsonian

[Carroll is] a wonder, a nature write’s nature writer… he is a marvel. I read him rejoicing” - Ted Hoagland
