Please help us welcome back
Mark Travis and Mike Pride.
Current publisher and former editors for the Concord Monitor,
they collaborated on My Brave Boys, the story of Civil War's 5th NH Volunteers.
Mark is the author of the new fiction, Pliney Fiske; A Civil War Mystery
and Mike's newest book is Our War; Days and Events in the Fight for the Union
Two thousand regiments fought in Union armies during the Civil War. None suffered more deaths than the Fifth New Hampshire Volunteers. The authors spent eight years digging for the story of the Volunteers and their leader in letters, diaries, memoirs, official records, and newspaper accounts. The result is a military history unfolded in human terms, as the men themselves experienced it.
This is a wonderful novel, alive in the moment, from the first scene to the last. It rings true, too, free of the cloying sentimentality that afflicts most of our Civil War memories. This is a gritty, real world that Travis unpacks, one filled with characters particular to this story, but also universal in their familiarity and dimension. I felt like I was there. --Filmmaker Ken Burns
